The construction of a new sunroom addition to this historic cape gave us the opportunity to design a gracious two-level patio. Sited on the western side of the house, the patio is large enough to accomodate a graduation party. The two levels give the owners the chance to use the patio in sections and keeps the space from seeming too big. The broad circular staircase doubles as seating for guests and as a place to display potted plants. Bluestone is used throughout for the paving, its color fitting classically with the warm grey of the house.
An arbor and and a holly hedge separates the patio and garden from the driveway and barn, making the area into its own private world. Perennials are planted on the inside border of the hedge facing the southern sun. The lawn that extends beyond the patio offers plenty of room for family games.
