We designed and supervised the construction of a series of gardens on a quarter of an acre off the back of a rambling one story house and studio. Our client, an artist, wanted a large, manageable perennial garden, a relaxing view from her deck and a place to sit outside where she could see from one garden to another.
In response to her requests we created the Zig Zag Garden- a sunny perennial border and a Contemplative Garden. The "magic garden" off the new studio was saved for future construction.
The Zig Zag Garden is backed by a tall board-and-board fence in a zig zag pattern. The fence separates the garden from the woods while providing a strong backdrop for the explosive color and free form perennial border. In contrast, the soft and curvilinear lines of the contemplative garden offset the architectural masses of evergreen planting chosen for their strong form, texture and reserved color palette. The contrast and separation of the two gardens make the space seem larger than it really is.

Now that the garden has grown, in the owner has been able to paint the scene just outside her studio---a rich pattern of asters, peonies, iris and ornamental grasses---backed by an array of flowering vines.
