Even though this house and garden occupy a very compact site, we have been able to create a series of spaces that are different enough in character that the landscape feels expansive.
The property is divided into four interrelated areas. Since the house is on a corner, the two street sides of the home are landscaped with lawn and foundation plantings. Inside the fence, the pool, pavillion and arbor offer spacious entertaining and lounging. We put a sunny lower circle near the kitchen and dining rooms for easy three-season entertaining. Finally, the entry circle, near the front door, is inside the fence, too. This helps to make it a shady retreat and seating spot, away from view, even though it's very close to the street. It's connected by a curved walk to the garage.
The plantings are all chosen for the character and interest they lend to a small space. Daylilies, ornamental grasses and vines add a relaxed feeling to a backbone of evergreens and flowering trees. This garden offers interesting views at every turn.
